Jody was right of course. It wasn’t quite midnight, but it had taken a while to tell Jody what had happened since her arrival in Little Glen, including the idea about Jody being her lover. In true form Jody had been very thorough in his questioning, even asking what she thought Will’s perception might be.

“Well, I want to say his perception is diluted.” Then she snapped out, “How the hell do I know what he’s thinking? I’m not a mind reader.”

After nursing half a glass of wine, Jody was finished with all of his questions. He leant back on his chair and folded his hands behind his head, studying her.

“So, what do you think? Pretty crazy?” she asked, toying with the stem of her wine glass.

“Not so crazy. I would say…inventive.”

“Excuse me?”

“Will has found something he wants and he is using the tools given to him to get it. I mean…come on…an eight-hundred-year-old marriage contract, that’s brilliant!”

Meghan’s jaw hit the table.

“I wonder where I could get one of those.”

“Jody!” Meghan shouted. She peeked over his shoulder to see only a few people staring at her. “Didn’t you hear what I said?” She leaned over the table. “If I refuse to honour our bet, he will use the contract and force me to marry him.”

“Oh, I heard you. But, for the record I still think it’s pretty slick. The man has a gift.”

“It’s an evil gift, Jody,” she whispered low under her breath. “Evil.”

Jody threw his head back and laughed.

“Stop laughing,” she whined. “Help me. I don’t want this. I don’t want him to want me.”

“Really, I’m having a hard time believing that.”

She blinked at him. “What?”

“You get this dreamy look on your face every time you…” Jody’s mouth dropped open as he pointed a finger at her. “You’ve had sex with him.”

“I… What?… No.”

“You lie,” Jody accused happily.

“Jody, please.” She exhaled.

“You naughty girl.”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“Doesn’t matter? Of course it matters.” He stopped grinning at her and asked, straight-faced, “Was he good? I bet he was.”

She tried to hide the smile, but this was Jody, it was nearly impossible to hide her feelings from him. “Yeah,” she ended on a sigh. She couldn’t help it.

“That good, huh?”

“It really was.”

He stopped and leaned across the table, taking hold of her hands. “Did you stop to think that Will might actually be in love with you? That this old marriage contract is just an excuse?”

She shook her head. He couldn’t be in love with her, they barely knew each other. “I don’t… How can I… It can’t be.” She struggled for a breath.

“Stop selling yourself short. Why couldn’t he love you?”

A heavy silence hung between them. What if he was right?

“He’s a Special Forces guy or…whatever. He was trained to pick things up fast, right? He would have to be very perceptive to be a good soldier, wouldn’t he?”

“Stop it. I know what you’re doing.”

“Someone has to do it.” He squeezed her hands.

She stumbled on her words. “I don’t…think… What if he…” She was so scared it was true.
